What You Need to Know About IPL/Photofacials Before Getting Treatments

  • April 7, 2021

Intense Pulse Light, AKA IPL, is a versatile and established treatment that has been around since the 90’s and is still one of the most common in-office treatments for skin that is in need of rejuvenation. If you are bothered by age and sun spots, broken capillaries, or just the overall appearance of your skin, then you should seriously consider IPL/Photofacial treatments. At Caddell’s Laser Clinic, we use the Lumenis M22 for these treatments to gently and effectively treat a wide variety of skin conditions including:

  • Sun Spots, Age Spots and Freckles
  • Acne
  • Roscea
  • Visible Signs of Aging
  • Spider Veins or Broken Capillaries
  • Hemangiomas

IPL should not be dismissed as an “old” therapy because this lunchtime treatment has managed to keep up with the times, which include shorter treatment sessions and faster results.

IPL is its own technology which uses wavelengths of light to treat pigmentation and vascular imperfections and to improve your skin’s overall appearance. Lumenis IPL allows your Master Esthetician at Caddell’s to customize your treatment to your skin type and the results you want.

IPL/Photofacial Treatments are only as good as the person giving them. The Lumenis treatments were developed by laser medical experts and all treatments are FDA approved. Your Master Esthetician has been trained on this advanced technology on how to adjust the settings according to your skin type, skin color, and the specific skin treatment you are choosing. Be wary of the super inexpensive deals on IPL treatments, offered by discount providers who have little experience or training. They may not use devices properly – which could lead to permanent skin damage. IPL is safe in skilled hands but burns and scarring from IPL can occur when done by poorly trained technicians. Don’t be shy about asking questions when you’re having your initial consultation.

IPL Treatments work great for a wide variety of people regardless of age or condition of their skin. As we age, we develop spots on our bodies. IPL can greatly lighten those spots, and older people concerned about skin tone get great results from IPL. IPL treatments also reduce Rosacea, which gets worse when working out or drinking wine which can cause embarrassment. IPL treatments close off the blood supply to the tiny capillaries which diminishes the redness. People with broken capillaries on the sides of their nostrils, chin and cheeks have IPL to reduce these.

IPL is a great treatment for Acne because it kills the P-acne bacteria which reduces breakouts. These treatments can be done every other week to effectively control acne. During your initial consultation, your Master Esthetician will use the Fitzpatrick system of classifying skin colors to determine if IPL treatments will work for you.

Not all IPL/Photofacial treatments are created equal. There are different machines that have different wavelength ranges, the Lumenis M22 provides a wider range of wavlengths and a more powerful and effective than other machines that may be older and less powerful. The older machines may take longer, may not be as effective and may not provide as much improvement per treatment.

A photofacial is NOT a facial. Even though an IPL treatment is also known as a photofacial, it is a medical procedure and not a spa treatment. A facial won’t give you the same results as an IPL/photofacial and that’s because IPL addresses so many skin issues all at once such as acne, sun damage, broken capillaries, and hyperpigmentation just to name a few. And after a series of IPL treatments, your skin will feel smoother and show improvement in your skin texture.

For best results, a series of IPL is needed to make your skin act younger. A single session can show visible changes, however a series of three to five treatments will show the best results. After that, periodic treatments every six to 12 months will make skin “act” younger over the long term. IPL can also reverse the genetic markers for age – demonstrating the turning back of time at a cellular level. Your results will last longer if you take good care of your skin by using a good antioxidant and sunscreen. Your Master Esthetician at Caddell’s can work with you on getting the best skin care products for you, extending the effectiveness of your treatments.
