There are all kinds of weird things that happen to our skin as we age. It stands to reason that it would see a lot of action and suffer damage throughout our lives. Our skin is the largest organ on our body. It serves as a flexible barrier to the outside world and is an active living tissue. It’s a tough, but flexible, piece of armor that protects our more sensitive inner tissues.

It’s bombarded by sun, dirt and other environmental stresses. Our diet is full of ammunition that damages our skin;

  • Sugar
  • Processed and Fast Foods
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  • Caffeine
  • Salt
  • Some Carbs

can help wreak havoc on your skin.

There is good news however, the science and medical industry are constantly making advancements against the war on aging. This helps fight what happens to skin as you age, helping keep skin healthy and younger looking. Here are a few of the things that can happen to aging skin and some treatments to help.

What Happens as You Age

Actinic Keratosis

Harsh sun light or tanning beds can cause raised, crusty growths that can be a single spot or a cluster. Most growths turn red, some are tan or pinkish and are the most common form of precancerous skin cells. This is something that can happen as you age. Fractional Co2 and Thermo-Lo Treatments are successful in removing existing Actinic Keratosis spots. Prevention is key – be sure and use sunscreen, EVERYDAY!

Age Spots

Age spots are pesky brown spots that happen as you age. They are small dark patches that develop in places that get lots of sun - your face, hands, shoulders, and arms. The more time you spend outside the more you’ll likely develop and the younger you’ll be when they arrive. There are several treatments that can be used to remove age spots, the Candela Gmax Pro and IPL/Photo Facial Treatments. These are effective ways to remove age spots. The IPL would be used on your face and the Candela Gmax would be used on your body. Depending on other conditions you need to treat, your skin care specialist will recommend the most effective treatment for you. To prevent them, use sunscreen and avoid the sun during peak hours.

Cherry Angioma

These small, red bumps are another issue that happens as you age and can show up anywhere on your body. They’re more common on your back, chest, and stomach. Although they don’t hurt, they might bleed if they get hit or scraped.  They can usually be fine left alone, or you can have them removed with a laser if you don’t like the way they look. Thermo-Lo, AKA electro-cauterization, or EC, is a great way to treat Cherry Angiomas. EC is a non-invasive treatment which uses a tiny probe on the surface of the skin to dehydrate and remove Cherry Angiomas using a minor current.

Poikiloderma

Caused by accumulated sun damage, Poikiloderma looks like a stripe on your neck or a mild sunburn on your décolleté that never goes away. It can be brown, red, or both. It mainly affects women and IPL/Photo Facial works beautifully to get rid of it.

Saggy Skin

The most noticeable area for saggy skin is the jawline and neck, often referred to as turkey neck. Prevention is the best medicine for saggy skin – using sunscreen everyday throughout your life is the best option. If it’s a little late for that, then Micro Current is a treatment for lifting muscles. To tighten skin the Candela Gmax Pro works the best! The goal with these treatments is stimulating the facial and neck muscles, reduce and eliminate fine lines, increase collagen, improve the muscle tone, and facial circulation.

Skin Tags

These small pieces of tissue hang from your skin, and are usually found on the back, neck, chest, armpit or groin. Skin Tags happen often as you age. They aren’t dangerous, but they are annoying and unsightly and can bleed if scraped or accidentally torn off. If they bother you, the best treatment is Thermo-Lo, to effectively remove skin tags.

Spider Veins

Broken Capillaries, AKA Spider Veins, are bundles of broken blood vessels appearing on legs, ankles, feet, and face. While they don’t point to a major health problem, they can itch or burn and look unsightly. A laser treatment to safely remove Spider Veins is the long pulse Nd Yag Laser. The heat from the laser closes the vessel and the body removes the coagulated blood by absorbing it into the body. You may need three to four treatments to see the best results.

Sun Damage

Sun Damage really starts to pile on as you age. Your skin is getting thinner and damage from the sun will be more noticeable than when you were younger. The good news is there are several treatments that will help repair sun damage, and help prevent skin cancer from forming.

Partnering with a professional that can help determine which treatments will be the most effective for your skin is not only the smart thing to do, it’s the most cost-effective thing as well. Skin Rejuvenation Treatments, such as Laser Genesis and Candela Rejuvenation, work wonders on removing Sun Damage. Depending on the severity of the damage, your skin care professional may also suggest IPL/Photo Facial Treatments to remove sun damage.

Wrinkles

They’re going to show up as you age. However, healthy food, plenty of sleep, and regular exercise can slow the process. Use sunscreen and avoid strong soaps that strip natural oils from your skin and use medical grade skin care products. Don’t smoke or stop if you do because wrinkles appear earlier on smokers. Wrinkles aren’t bad for you, but no one wants to look like a Char Pei before their time. Chemical peelsMicro CurrentMicro Needling , laser treatments – such as Fractional Co2, and Laser Genesis can combat these, and other age-related skin issues.
