Habits that Make Skin Age Faster

  • June 14, 2012

Our skin is exposed to a variety of toxins in the environment from the moment we are born and many of the causes of aging skin are determined by the decisions you make each day.  Making unhealthy choices results in prematurely aging skin and this makes you look older, faster.

Knowing what’s harmful and avoiding these habits is the first step towards keeping your skin from becoming damaged and old looking.

  • Sun Exposure: Over exposure to the sun is very aging and damaging to the skin. Unprotected skin becomes mottled, freckles can turn into brown sun spots and you skin can look dry and leathery. Wrinkles and sagging increases along with the risk of skin cancer. You can improve the appearance of your skin and the sooner you start the better. If you do have evidence of damage from the sun there are a variety of treatments at Caddell’s that can help. Thermo-Lo can help remove Liver spots also known as Brown or Sun spots. Fractional CO2 Laser Treatments can remove 5-10 years of sun damage in one treatment.
  • Cigarette Smoke: Research has shown that exposure to cigarette smoke, whether you’re a smoker or you’re just around someone who smokes, is very damaging and aging to your skin. One reason is because smoking depletes your body of Vitamin C, which is a key ingredient for keeping your skin supple and moist. It is believed that exposure to cigarette smoke is as damaging and aging to skin as exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
  • Exposure to Cold Weather: A warm, dry room and cold winds and low temperatures can contribute to aging skin by making it dry. So before you venture out into the cold, be sure and use a good moisturizer. Using a humidifier in a heated room will help keep your skin moist and prevent it from getting too dry. Using a product such as Epionce's Renewal Facial Lotions sold at Caddell’s, can help combat dryness.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Exercise gets your blood pumping and tones your muscles – so get moving to help your skin stay young looking!
  • Alcohol: Using alcohol can create a flushed appearance on your face from broken blood vessels on the skin’s surface. This is caused because alcohol dilates the small blood vessels in the skin and increasing blood flow near the skin’s surface. These veins, once showing on the face can be treated with the Thermo-Lo for removal.
  • Stress: Try to vary your facial expressions during the day – this will help reduce aging skin due to stress. A good anti-aging skin care program, such as Epionce® Renewal and Restorative Creams and Lotions will help as well.
  • Lack of Sleep: A lack of sleep will show up first on your face. And too little sleep makes you look old and feel tired. Dark circles, bags under your eyes and sagging skin all contribute to a face that looks older than you really are.
  • Improper Cleansing of the Skin: improper cleansing of the skin is one of the most damaging things you can do to your skin. Using a tool, like the Clarisonic® to clean your skin will improve the appearance of your skin tone and reduces the appearance of pore size. The Clarisonic® micro-massage action cleans more than twice as effectively as manual cleaning.
