Do You Have Nail Fungus?

There’s no good time to go to the beach when you have toenail fungus, or to wear sandals or those sexy, strappy open toed shoes. You really feel like wearing big, old army boots when you’ve got toenail fungus.

Nail fungus, aka onychomycosis,  is a fungal infection in one or more of your nails and it causes nails to become thick, yellow and brittle. It looks pretty ugly and it can hurt.  An infection with nail fungus may begin as a white or yellow spot on your nail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, it may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges — an unsightly and potentially painful problem.

Caddell’s Laser Clinic is now effectively treating toenail fungus and is taking appointments to treat this unsightly and painful condition.

Who Gets Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus tends to be a cosmetic problem for younger people and a pain issue for older folks. It is estimated that about half of the people over 70 have toenail fungus.

An infection with nail fungus may be difficult to treat, and it may recur. But medications are available to help clear up nail fungus and yet the relapse rate is 15% for people using typical medications, such as Lamisil, which works for about two out of three patients, according to their FDA approved prescribing information.

Recently however, laser treatments that combat the infection have been successfully used to treat this unsightly condition. This treatment consists of a laser beam being aimed at the infected nail to kill the organisms that cause the fungus. The new nail that grows out is fungus-free. This treatment has been in use since about 2009, and the odds of success are better with the laser; plus there are no side effects.

Call Caddell’s today at 425-998-0181 to schedule your appointment for toenail fungus treatment soon and you can shed those army boots for sandals in no time!

Treatments are six weeks apart and you will need approximately five treatments. It takes one year for the nail to grow out, so patience is necessary during treatments.

What are the symptoms of nail fungus (onychomycosis)?

  • Thickened nails
  • Yellow streaks in the skin under the nails
  • Bits of skin and pieces of nail under the nail
  • Brittle nails
  • Broken nails
  • Thickened nails
  • Nails distorted in shape
  • Dull nails, with no luster or shine
  • White spots on the nail
  • Powdery nail surface
  • Damaged nails, crumbly nails, nails with a brown or gray nail surface
  • A dark color, caused by debris building up under your nail

Infected nails also may separate from the nail bed, a condition called onycholysis. You may feel pain in your toes and detect a slightly foul odor.

Research done by PinPointe, a maker of lasers for nail fungus or onychomycosis, found more than 100 organisms, including fungi, yeast, mold and bacteria, that work together to cause nail fungus. Fungi love moist, dark environments such as wet shoes which make shoes the reason why toenail fungus is much more common than fingernail fungus, which can also occur.

Laser treatments for nail fungus, like traditional treatments, take time and patience and there may be a recurrence, it’s extremely difficult to eliminate nail fungus. Some patients have reported throwing away all of their socks and purchasing a device that uses ultraviolet light to sanitize shoes in order to help eliminate the condition.
