Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment used to remove sun-damaged skin and to lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. Microdermabrasion is a simple process with minimal pain and does not require the use of anesthesia. Microdermabrasion is usually more effective on scars which are slightly raised above the surrounding skin than on scars which are sunken. Microdermabrasion is also a preferred acne treatment, but can only be effective if repeated at regular intervals. Those considering Microdermabrasion should not have taken the medication Accutane (isotretinion) in the previous twelve months. Through microdermabrasion the facial skin can be rejuvenated to cover up the effects of aging.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment which treats only the outer layer of skin. Because of this, the Microdermabrasion treatment is relatively painless; there is no downtime or side effects. A device sprays tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin.

Patients typically experience some redness for about an hour after microdermabrasion and some tightness of the skin. There may be some minor flaking and skin sensitivity for a few days after the microdermabrasion procedure.
